The concept of trust has received a lot of attention in recent years, for a number of reasons. On the one hand, trust is seen as a necessary enabling precondition for B2C and other sensitive services on the web, and the problem of creating practical "trust on-line" is regarded as of high importance. On the other hand, the aforementioned reason has also spawned efforts on analysing the concept of trust at a more "philosophical" level. This paper presents an analysis of a logical kind, to effectively address the issue of why we actually need to represent trust explicitly at all. The conclusion is that in open communities the explicit trust representations may be communicated between members, and this will contribute to the privacy and security of these members.
